Southampton against Manchester United

In goes a cross towards Tadic, who heads for goal -- but heads wide.

But the visitors make a mess of that corner, and Southampton come to the other end...

And he wins a corner. Five added minutes, says the referee.

McNair leads a charge forward for United...

Southampton get in each other's way -- Davies wanted to shoot but Long took the ball away to cross it. Suddenly, it's jittery for United.

Then Wanyama is brought down, and this is a free-kick in a good crossing position...

Suddenly it's United looking ragged in possession. Mane and Long link on the right.

Can the home side find a way back to parity? Even the prospect of them getting one back seemed very unlikely not that long ago...

That's out of nothing as well -- in comes a Southampton cross, and Pelle thumps in an excellent header to give Saints some unexpected hope.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> SOUTHAMPTON 2-3 MANCHESTER UNITED

Ward-Prowse fires a cross in -- De Gea's punch is less convincing than much of his previous work, but there's no harm done as the United defenders clear their lines.

Van Dijk will, indeed, head for the touchline. Heading for the final five minutes on the south coast.

Van Dijk is down with cramp, and Martial is the man helping him out. Doubt the Saints man will be able to continue...

United have had more than 60 percent of possession in this half.

A Pelle backheel goes out of play. The visiting fans are the only ones you can hear at St Mary's now. United are going second, barring an incredibly unlikely collapse.

Rooney looks for Depay, but the flag is up against him.

Depay takes the free-kick, and bends it over the top. Heading towards the last ten minutes on the south coast.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> And Fonte goes into the book. How the mood has changed at St Mary's.

Fonte makes a frustrated challenge on Martial.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Striker Shane Long is on for Ward-Prowse. Southampton are chasing some sort of way back into things, but it doesn't look likely.

Now then -- Sane goes down in the area as Smalling comes across to challenge. No prizes for guessing what the home fans want, but it's not a penalty. The right decision from the referee.

Still United on the ball. Their dominance of possession is almost total at the moment.

Mata curls the free-kick -- and curls it into the wall.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Van Dijk is in the book as he drags down Martial, who has space on the right and is looking for the right moment to play Rooney in.

Schneiderlin, back on his old patch, makes a fine sliding challenge to stop Southampton in their tracks as they try to get some momentum going down the left.

Twenty minutes or so remaining in both those games.

Two excellent saves within seconds at Anfield -- first Mignolet stops a Jarvis effort, then Ruddy produces a superb tip-over from Moreno's attempt.

United have been excellent in this half, and in the latter stages of the first. They are well in control here, and Southampton look to have run out of both steam and ideas.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> McNair on for Rojo as United make another switch

Depay's effort crashed back off the post and Mata fired the rebound coolly into the net. Surely that's enough for United now...

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> SOUTHAMPTON 1-3 MANCHESTER UNITED

He plays it crossfield and gets into the area as Depay turns and makes room to shoot...

United are having so much possession at the moment. Here's Mata...

United on the ball again -- Southampton are giving them space to push into. Ronald Koeman needs to find a way to get his side to push out a bit more -- the way they are doing things is beginning to invite pressure.

Another uncertain Southampton backpass -- but this one just has enough pace on it to frustrate Depay.

Russell Martin fires home from inside the area to put the Canaries back on terms at Anfield.

Mata plays the ball wide for Rojo as Manchester United seek a third. Not this time, though -- the ball is cleared by the home defence.

As Norwich try to find a leveller at Anfield, full-back Steven Whittaker picks up the ball inside his own half and dashes forward before thumping a wild attempt into the Anfield Road stand.

Free-kick Southampton, round about half-way. But it's wasted, hit far too long and beyond the chasing pack of attackers.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Carrick is off and Schweinsteiger on for Manchester United. An hour on the clock on the south coast.

It's a fabulous save, one-handed. Great stuff, but then we expect him to do that all the time these days.

Fonte flicks the ball on, and it's heading into the top corner before the Spaniard intervenes and claws it out.

<b>GOOD SAVE DE GEA</b>

Good work from Mane, who hassles and harries and wins his side a corner. In it comes...

Wanyama feels he was fouled by Rojo in midfield. The referee doesn't share that feeling, instantly waving play on.

But when the corner comes in it's too deep and is headed clear.

The home fans are doing their utmost to gee their players on...

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Romeu is off and Steven Davis on as Ronald Koeman tries to shake up the Saints, whose drive has deserted them. But wait a moment -- Van Dijk gets forward to win a corner...

And they don't get that tonic, as the cross is far too close to David De Gea and he claims well.

Free-kick in a promising crossing position for Southampton, who need a tonic. The heady days of their whirlwind first half-hour seem a long time ago now.

Liverpool sub Danny Ings breaks the deadlock at Anfield after a pass from Alberto Moreno -- relief for Brendan Rodgers.

A total turnaround now, and three goals in less than two full Premier League games for Martial.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 MANCHESTER UNITED

Back on the south coast, there's a bad mistake in the Southampton defence...

Just to clarify -- the striker change at Liverpool was made because of an injury to Benteke.

Carrick to Rooney, whose touch towards Martial is not delicate. Those two haven't really found a matching wavelength yet.

At Anfield, Liverpool have made a half-time substitution -- Ings replaces Benteke.

They have another, momentary injury worry as Van Dijk goes to ground, falling heavily in a challenge with Martial, but he is OK.

And Southampton make a bright start, putting in some good work chasing their opponents down.

<B>SECOND HALF UNDER WAY</B>

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Martina on for Targett, who took a knock at the end of the first half, as Southampton also make a change.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Valencia will be coming on for Darmian for United.

The second half is just around the corner -- can United pick up where they left off? Or will Southampton rediscover the early verve that gave them the lead?

<b>HALF-TIME</b>: LIVERPOOL 0-0 NORWICH CITY

<b>HALF-TIME:</b> SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

A minute to be added at Southampton...

At Anfield, after a spell of Liverpool pressure, Norwich force a save from Simon Mignolet as Cameron Jerome fires in a cross-shot.

Half-time is just around the corner in the south coast sunshine. On the Saints bench, they are shielding their eyes against the sun as they squint at the action.

Southampton finally get it clear, but United are pressing. The dynamic has totally shifted since that Martial moment.

It's cleverly worked and falls to Schneiderlin, whose effort deflects behind. What a return that would have been...

Opening goalscorer Pelle does the honours but it's another corner...

Final five minutes of the first half -- Mata races towards a loose ball inside the area and Van Dijk is there to clear. Corner to United...

At Liverpool, Milner and Benteke try to work a one-two -- but Ruddy is there once more for Norwich.

Good closing down by Southampton inside their own half, but it's United on the ball again. Who'd have seen this coming about ten minutes ago? The hosts were in such control.

United have settled right down after that equaliser. Suddenly, they are much better on the ball -- and suddenly the possession has much more purpose.

Both there and at Southampton, there's about ten minutes remaining until the break.

At Liverpool, a mistake by Russell Martin almost costs his team -- but goalkeeper John Ruddy dives to stop Sturridge's effort. Still goalless on Merseyside.

You can't say United deserve parity on the balance of play, but they have it -- now, can they build on it?

Out of nothing! Southampton had chances to clear, but when Mata is tackled the ball falls to Martial, who sidesteps and then fires home in impressive style. Two games, two goals -- what an impact.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

Depay and Martial link up -- but not for long, as the expensive ex-Monaco striker loses possession. To be honest, there's no sign that what United are doing is becoming any less disjointed.

Good work from Southampton at the back, clearing their lines neatly and with no panic. But back come United, and when the cross comes in it's deep and headed away.

Half an hour gone, and Southampton are comfortable with this 1-0 lead as things stand. You have the feeling LVG might have a few strongly-worded things to say come half-time.

The returning Schneiderlin is penalised for a foul. He played for Southampton in three divisions -- League One, the Championship and then the Premier League.

Mata is adjudged to have fouled Tadic on halfway. He doesn't like the decision, and neither does Rooney, but they are not changing Clattenburg's mind.

And at Southampton, the home side win a corner. Martial is the man back there to head clear.

At Anfield, Norwich's Russell Martin steps in to stop the returning Daniel Sturridge's pass from finding its way to Philippe Coutinho.

Forward it comes again, though, and Depay crosses -- but there's more in defence than attack and the Saints smother that brief flicker of danger.

United are in possession inside their own half. This is where all the passing in the world won't hurt anyone. When they play it forward, it goes wrong again.

That's a bit more like it from United -- Mata finds Depay with a decent cross, but it's not the easiest header to control and it goes over the top. Mata had time there and used it well, picking out the Dutchman on the far side of the area.

The away fans are already urging their team to attack -- but there's precious little evidence of them mustering much threat at the moment.

Another optimistic forward pass from United, another interception from Southampton.

You can't say that about United's efforts in the first 20 minutes.

Ward-Prowse has a go from the edge of the area -- it's well-struck, but straight at De Gea, who holds easily enough. Again, Southampton are the team with the cohesion and the zip about their passing.

United are struggling to string any passing together at the moment. Wayne Rooney shows his frustration as another ball goes awry -- they haven't hit any sort of stride at all yet.

And back on the south coast, Martial tries his luck -- and blazes an ambitious effort high. The home fans can't resist a chorus of 'What a Waste of Money.'

At Anfield, the only real attempt of the game so far has come from Norwich's Graham Dorrans, whose effort from outside the box is wide of the mark.

The striker did so well then after Smalling had put his team into trouble with a risky pass -- he found room for a shot but it clipped the base of the post. De Gea was furious with his defenders, and who's to blame him?

<b>OFF THE POST!</b>

Ronald Koeman will be delighted with the tempo and aggression of his side, who could add a second as Pelle turns in to space...

Now, what can United find in response? They haven't shown much so far -- Martial has hardly had any sort of service, with Rooney having the same problem.

A brilliant cross from Ward-Prowse, and United just couldn't handle it. De Gea did so well to stop the first effort, but Pelle couldn't really miss.

Pelle is the man on the mark -- fine build-up. Ward-Prowse crosses, De Gea makes a great stop from Mane but the ball falls to Pelle and he taps home. Saints have shown the greater purpose so far -- and now they have the lead!

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

It's cleared, and then Southampton are penalised for a foul as they try to win possession back. The home fans don't like it, but I think Mark Clattenburg was correct there.

And another -- an excellent cross from Tadic, and Rojo defends it well. Corner to Southampton...

A good moment from Southampton, and the first show of real intent in the game so far.

A bit scrappy from United, conceding possession. Saints come forward quickly and Tadic and Mane combine before the latter blasts an effort wide from just outside the box.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> At Anfield, Liverpool's James Milner is in the book inside the opening minutes.

Then Saints try to up the tempo, looking for Mane on the right of the area, but the pass to him is overcooked.

Very much a case of two sides making tentative opening steps in the late summer sunshine.

Darmian fouls Tadic. Southampton take the free-kick quickly and pass it around their backline.

Carrick on the ball for United, found by a neat Depay flick. But that breaks down, and then it's a chance for Mane to try a trick or two of his own out wide. It doesn't really go anywhere, but the home fans enjoyed that.

A loud chorus of 'When the Saints Go Marching In' rings around St Mary's. As for the action on the pitch, it's still very much a case of bits and pieces in these early moments.

The ball makes its way towards the edge of the area, where Virgil van Dick is in the right place to hook clear. The Dutch defender joined the Saints from Celtic earlier this summer.

Then they defend a little too zealously, giving United a free-kick on half-way.

Southampton defend as the ball is played towards Martial, the man who announced himself in such spectacular style against Liverpool at Old Trafford, and do so with no great alarms.

Southampton begin the game on the south coast, and the ball is soon back with David De Gea in the United goal. Plenty of noise from a vociferous away following.
