Switzerland against Ukraine

FULL-TIME, EXTRA-TIME: I've had the misfortune to watch some bad football matches in my time. That was the worst, By some distance. And so an interminable match finally reaches the conclusion we all knew it would - a penalty shoot-out. Finally, we are going to have some action.

Italy must be quaking in their boots; they face the winner of this match.

A succession of sideways and backwards passes as the game limps onwards like a lame dog, waiting to be shot.

SWISS SUB: Frei comes off, replaced by Lustrinelli.

Streller and Gusin go off the field for some treatment after that tussle inside the penalty box.

GREAT DEFENDING! Streller holds off his man as he tries to get away from Gusin; the striker cuts inside and tries to get his shot away, but Gusin slides in and blocks at the last moment. Super defending.

There are a lot of tired, clumsy fouls now; the game has been reduced to a succession of free-kicks.

Milevskiy does well to beat Magnin and get to the by-line; he tries to pick out Shevchenko with a low cross, but a defender slides the ball out for a corner.

Even now, the Ukraine are taking their time over a free-kick.

UKRAINE SUB: Voronin is replaced by Milevskiy; just a third cap for the young striker.

Barnetta curls the corner in to the middle; the keeper comes but doesn't reach the ball, but Grichting can only hook the ball on to the roof of the net.

Good strength from Streller as he holds of his man before winning the corner.

Ruslan Rotan curls a free-kick in to the middle, but Pascal Zuberbuhler punches clear once again.

It is a real shame to see Shevchenko, one of the greatest strikers on the planet, reduced to playing in a match like this. He has had absolutely nothing to work with.

Ukraine kick off the second-half of extra-time; 15 minutes, and this will all be over.

HLF-TIME, EXTRA-TIME: Both sides appear to be playing for penalties. That, at least, is sure to be interesting.

Streller embarrasses himself with the worst dive so far seen at this World Cup. The Beautiful Game doesn't seem so pretty right now.

Shevchenko is caught off-side; I believe that is the first off-side of the evening - a statistic that tells a long, painful story.

ANOTHER SHOT! Tymoschuk takes the hint, and decides to shoot; he drags it horribly wide from 35 yards.

A SHOT! Vogel picks up a poor clearance before driving in a low shot from just inside the box; unfortunately for Switzerland, it is straight at the keeper.

...before finally deciding to clear. It is heartbreaking to see football played this way. It truly makes me weep inside.

...and waits...

...and waits....

Zuberbuhler takes his time as a back-pass is rolled to him. No Ukrainian closes him down, so he waits...

...this time he strikes his shot straight in to the defensive wall.

Switzerland win a free-kick, 30 yards out. It is in a similar position to from where Frei hit the crossbar, 70 minutes ago...

Switzerland appeal for handball inside the penalty area as a high cross causes a moment's panic. Nothing doing, says the ref.

Barnetta fires in a shot from distance; unsurprisingly, it bobbles well, well wide.

Frei screams angrily as he is brought down by Tymoshuk.

UKRAINE SUB: Rebrov comes on to replace Vorobey; can the former West Ham player inspire his nation?

A few of the players were treated for cramp during the break; I can't see the tempo of the game rising much above 'pedestrian' for the remainding half-hour.

Degen woefully over-hits as he tries to roll a pass in to the run of Cabanas. It is the worst pass of the night - and that's saying something.

Switzerland kick off the first period of extra-time.

END OF 90 MINUTES: Let's be honest, that was a stinker. Neither side showed any ambition, no inclination to win the game. We'll have 30 minutes of extra-time, but the chance of someone breaking the deadlock in that time, frankly, seems remote.

...Zuberbuhler comes out and nervily punches away for a throw.

Ukraine win a late corner when Nesmachniy's cross is deflected behind...

Neither side are showing any inclination to press forward and score; this is a little embarrassing. It is the second round of the World Cup, for goodness sake - TRY AND SCORE!

Switzerland break down the right, but Degen's pass is behind Cabanas and the move breaks down.

Vornin goes to the ground under the challenge of two Swiss defenders, just inside the penalty area; no penalty, says the referee.

Magnin is doing his best to lift the crowd: "Come on!" he screams to his fans as he prepares to take a throw. I appreciate his efforts, but it's going to take more than that to wake this crowd.

...but Shovkovskiy again punches commandingly and Ukraine clear their lines.

Barnetta sends the corner in to the middle...

Switzerland win a corner as Magnin gets forward down the left wing and sends over a dangerous cross.

Frei, who has dropped a little deeper since the arrival of Streller, loses the ball on the edge of the Ukraine penalty area, ending a promising charge from the Swiss.

Shevchenko is one of the few players who has the quality to win this match with a single strike, but he has been absolutely starved of service.

Vashchuk writhes on the ground in agony after a challenge with Barnetta on the edge of his own penalty area. The stretcher comes on, prompting a quick recovery.

One of these sides must have a goal in them, surely? Ukraine look the more likely, at this stage; they seem just a little more insisive going forward.

UKRAINE SUB: Rotan comes on to replace Kalinichenko.

Ukraine win a corner; it is swung wickedly in to the near post, but Tymoschuk flashes a header wide.

At least the tempo has started to pick up, even if the quality hasn't.

...but Magnin puts too much pace on the ball and fires it over the top of the crossbar.

Cabanas is tugged to the ground; Free-kick Switzerland...

Switzerland have a spell with the ball, but good Ukrainian pressing forces them to play it all the way back to their goalkeeper.

NOT FROM THERE! Cabanas finds some space 35 yards out; he has a chance to feed a pass in to a team-mate, but instead opts to shoot; high and wide.

The tempo is picking up a little as we approach the final stages, but a breakthrough still looks a long way away.

WHAT A STRIKE! Shevchenko brings the ball under control, cuts in from the right and unleashes a fierce left-foot shot; it flashes a foot or so wide of the near post.

BLOCKED! Frei picks up a short pass and immediately fires in a shot, but his effort is blocked.

The crowd are resorting to the Mexican Wave to keep themselves entertained. It says a lot about the match.

Switzerland are now playing with a slightly more offensive 4-4-2 formation; how will Ukraine respond?

SWITZERLAND SUB: Yakin off, Streller on. Yakin looked off the pace, and is replaced by a big target man who will go up and play alongside Frei.

Nesmachniy is off the field for treatment on an injury he picked up in that challenge with Cabanas.

Cabanas goes in strongly on Nesmachniy; replays show it was a poor challenge; the Swiss midfielder stood on the thigh of his opponent. No booking, though.

...Shevchenko fires in the shot, but the defensive wall does its job and the ball spins off Frei and out for a corner.

Barnetta becomes the first player booked this evening after he trips Shevchenko, heading towards the penalty area. Free-kick, in a dangerous spot...

Gusev has been Ukraine's most threatening attacking player so far this evening; he has been excellent down the right flank.

Gusev sends over another good cross from the right, but Magnin makes a good header to end the interest of Shevchenko behind him.

The defenders are certainly having the luck of the bounce so far tonight; nothing has fallen to a striker in the box, everything has landed at the boot of a defender.

Barnetta swings a corner in to the middle, but Vaschuk clears with his head. Good defending.

Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Blatter are spotted in the crowd; they look a little bored, if anything.

I'd like to say I can see a goal coming. But I can't. I really, really can't.

Yakin is Switzerland's most creative player, but he looks well off the pace tonight.

TESTING! Voronin turns his man on the edge of the area and fires in a snap-shot, but Zuberbuhler is alert to the danger and saves easily enough.

One of these sides needs to take a risk, to be brave and get players forward; no-one wants the lottery of extra-time and penalties.

BLOCKED! Yakin tries to curl a shot in to the far corner, but his effort is blocked on the edge of the area.

Ukraine have made the better start to the half, but both sides are still being a little cautious.

WIDE! Gusev whips a cross in from the right, but Voronin nods wide of the far post. Good effort, and a good run to get in front of his defender.

A long pass through the middle is well cleared by Grichting, under pressure from Shevchenko.

Switzerland kick off the second half.

HALF-TIME: A tight, competitive half with just two moments of quality; Shevchenko's header and Frei's free-kick - both beat the keeper, but struck the crossbar.

Ukraine win a late corner when Grichting comes across to slide the ball off the feet of Vorobey. Kalinichenko sends the corner in to the middle, but it is a terrible delivery.

Shevchenko has been kept very quiet by the Swiss defence; they have starved him of service and not allowed him any space whatsoever.

...but again, Shovkobskiy confidently punches clear.

...He curls it in to the middle...

Switzerland win a free-kick, out on the right corner of the penalty area. Yakin stands over the set-piece...

Nesmachniy is left on the ground after a foul by Dagen; still the referee keeps his cards in his pocket.

There may be a lack of thrills and spills, but this game has at least been played in a good spirit; the players are helping each other to their feet, shaking hands, and I haven't spotted a single dive as yet.

...but Shovkovskiy comes through a crowd to punch clear of danger.

...Yakin curls the ball in to the middle...

Frei is just beaten to a pass by Gusin, who slides the ball out for a corner...

For all their organisation and commitment in defence, the Swiss look a little clueless going forward.

Tymoschuk is caught by Degen; he limps as he gets to his feet, but appears to be okay.

Wicky fouls Gusev; again, no booking. The referee is doing well to resist the temptation to start flashing cards.

The Switzerland defence has been further disrupted, then; how will they cope against the master-striker Sheva?

SWISS SUB: Grichting comes on to replace Djourou; the young Arsenal defender must have picked up an injury.

So, a third of the game gone, and we don't have a breakthrough. But there have been some encouraging signs, certainly; neither side are content to sit back and wait.

TAME! Muller collects the ball, runs in to space and decides to shoot, but his side-footed effort from 30 yards lacks power and is straight at the goalkeeper.

Ukraine are starting to look a little stronger than their opponents now; they seem more insisive when they break, and are certainly getting more men forward.

RUBBISH! TWICE! Shelayev scuffs a shot so badly, it is blocked and falls to him again; undaunted by his dreadful first effort, he strikes for goal again - this time he blasts high over the bar from the edge of the area.

Frei works really hard up-front on his own for Switzerland; he is a strong, intelligent runner and always gives his side options.

DREADFUL FINISH! Gusin gets down the right again; he finds Shevchenko, who rolls the ball across to Tymoschuk, but he curls a shot well wide.

CALM DEFENDING! Gusin gets down the right and puts in a low cross; Djourou hears the call of Zuberbuhler and allows the ball to run through to his keeper.

Tymoschuk fouls Yakin as Switzerland tried to break; no booking.

Finally, the game has woken up after a very slow start. Both sides have hit the crossbar now and have come close to opening the scoring.

OFF THE BAR! Frei strikes a superb free-kick against the crossbar. Fantastic effort.

Barnetta is tripped by Shelayev as the midfielder cut through the middle and made his way towards the area. Free-kick to the Swiss, 30 yards out...

That was a brave effort by Shevchenko; he threw himself at the ball, despite the danger of flying boots, and he came within inches of breaking the deadlock.

OFF THE BAR! Shevchenko dives in bravely to head for goal as Kalinichenko curls in the free-kick, but his effort bounces up off the ground and against the crossbar.

Djourou is penalised for climbing all over Voronin; free-kick, on the left-edge of the area...

It has been a very slow start to this match; there look to be a lot of nerves out there.

The Swiss fans are really getting behind their side; thousands have made the short trip in to Germany to support their nation.

Switzerland look very organised at the back; they are a young side but work very hard for each other.

Degen comes in with a strong challenge on Vorobey; free-kick, but no booking.

Neither side has really been able to get hold of the midfield as yet, and the strikers are looking a little isolated as a result.

GOOD EFFORT! Wicky fires in a shot from distance; Shovkovskiy dives full-length to push it around the post.

It has been a cagey start to the match from these two sides; perhaps we should expect that they will take a while to get in to what is their biggest match by a long stretch.

Zuberbuhler comes through a crowd to claim the corner at the back post. Good handling from the keeper.

Vorobey fires a cross in towards Shevchenko; Djourou nods behind for the first corner of the evening...

I wonder if we are going to be able to get through this match tonight without a red card; it seems like an age since that has happened at this World Cup.

Djourou keeps his cool to shepherd the ball back to his goalkeeper. It is only Djourou's fifth cap tonight.

JUST TOO STRONG! Zuberbuhler comes out to the edge of his penalty area to smother the ball as Shevchenko looked to get on the end of a ball from the back.

Switzerland have started the better of the two sides; they are looking comfortable in midfield, where Vogel and Cabanas are controlling the pace.

Neither of these sides were really fancied to do particularly well in this tournament, but they are playing for a place in the quarter final against Italy.

Kalinichenko helps out his full-back as Barnetta goes on a run down the right wing.

WIDE! A shot from the edge of the box is blocked, but the loose ball falls to Yakin, who smashes a shot well wide.

Barnetta is tripped by Kalinichenko; free-kick.

Both sides are lining up with a 4-4-1-1 formation; neither will want to give anything away too early.

Switzerland are the only country in the tournament yet to have conceded a goal; but tonight they are up against one of the best in Shevchenko.

Switzerland are missing their main defensive man, Senderos, who is out of the tournament after dislocating his shoulder in the previous game.

The Swiss fans far out-number their Ukrainian counterparts in the Rhein Energie Stadion.

Ukraine kick off in Cologne.

Hi there, welcome to our coverage of Switzerland's second-round clash against Ukraine. My name is Alex; let's get it on.
