Portsmouth against Southampton

Taylor draws a great save from Niemi as he blasts a straight rising shot on goal. Neimi is strong and alert to tip the ball over his crossbar

Southampton just edging into the game as it draws to a finish but it will be a disgrace if they get back into it

Phillips controls a long, raking pass fantastically on his chest to skip past Primus and bear down on goal. Great chance but Hislop is out of the traps quickly and smothers the shot. Great save

Portsmouth substitution as Yakubu is replaced by the on-loan Lomana Tresor LuaLua

Good work from Pahars across the edge of the box provides Delap with a shooting chance from the D. His effort is blocked by the outstretched leg of Primus but only as far as Phillips. His shot is powerful but the angle is acute and Hislop is able to block at his near post

Final substitution from the visitors as Crainey makes way for Fabrice Fernandes

Snap shot from the edge of the box from Yakubu is dragged well wide from a promising position

From the corner Stefanovic rises highest - by climbing on Delap - and wins a header. Penalised for the blatant climb

Pompey pressure sees them win a corner from a deflected Taylor cross

Portsmouth have got a head of steam up and are looking the stronger team. Southampton have shown less in the second half than they even did in the first

Quick break from Portsmouth sees Stone overlapping on the left and able to fire in a cross that is just too strong for Yakubu

Great ball forward releases Phillips into the box in space. De Zeeuw comes over to cover and forces Phillips into hurrying a cross that reaches no one

Second substitution for Southampton sees McCann go off and Marian Pahars come on

Neimi does very well to meet a Taylor free kick with both fists under pressure from a number of blue shirts

The volume has been turned up as has the tempo after the goal. I only hope this means both sides will actually start playing football now

Long ball forward is only part cleared by Southampton. Ball is returned and Smertin releases Stone on the right behind the Saints' back line. A low driven cross is met by Yakubu, unmarked 8 yards out, and he finishes easily to send Fratton Park wild. 1-0 Portsmouth!

Goal for Portsmouth!!

Stone swings in a free kick from the right and it is James Beattie in his own box who clears

Shot from distance on the volley from Phillips rather sums up the match as it only just goes for a goal kick instead of a throw in. This game is a poor one

Fairly decent move from Southampton sees Beattie forced out wide right before delivering a cross towards the near post that is too close to Hislop to cause any threat

Punt forward from Primus once more catches Yakubu offside

Great deep cross from the Portsmouth left gets past everyone except the outstretched leg of Smertin but he is unable to direct the volley back across the goal

Faye plays up to the feet of Yakubu in the box. Leaning into his marker he turns well and gets a shot away but it is a weak one

Portsmouth starting to take control of the game once more

Pompey retain possession and Sherringham, twisting and turning in the box finds space to get a shot away. It is low and on target but Neimi reads it all the way

Corner is a good one and the ball brushes just past Stefanovic

Pompey free-kick from the corner of the 18 yard box is swung in and Neimi takes no chances, rather acrobaticaly leaping to tip it round for a corner

Ball over from out by the right corner flag from Crainey is delivered to a good area but no Saints man is able to attack it properly

Beattie runs up, tops it and the ball bobbles forward to safety from a Pompey point of view

Free-kick over 40 yards out, with the wind at his back tempts Beattie to line up a shot

Yakubu gets the ball at his feet just outsid ethe box. Dips a shoulder then cuts back to create a shooting chance but the powerful drive goes well over

Yakubu competes with Neimi for a through ball but comes off second best. Called as being marginally offside anyway

Ball lumped into the Southampton box by Faye is easily dealt with by Lundekvam

Portsmouth kick-off the second-half and straight away find touch

A full blooded and committed affair as you would expect from these two rivals but the football has not matched the passion. Portsmouth should have scored on a number of occasions early on and it will be Southampton who are the happiest to see the scores level. Will Pompey be made to pay for their profligacy when Southampton have the wind behind them in the second half...?

Whistle is blown and the sides go in all square at 0-0

One minute of added time

Faye is the target for the deep cross but the weight on it is too strong and the Pompey man has little chance with the header

Stone wins a corner through sheer persistence down the right flank

Hislop has to be alert as Beattie charges down a clearance and very nearly puts Phillips away before the keeper gets out of his area and clears upfield

Beattie, getting the first real decent service he has had in the match so far, rises well to win a header that he just fails to direct goalwards

After a corner has been cleared and returned, Smertin fires high and wide from the corner of the box when there were options in the box for him

Wonderful, reverse pass from Smertin dissects the Saints' back line and puts Stone one-on-one with the keeper. Neimi closes down well and saves but the whistle has gone already for offside

Scrappy passage of play as possession is given away too easily by both sides

Resulting free-kick, from a good position, is wasted

First booking of the match as Higginbotham trips Smertin when he was away down the right in a promising position

The wind is still causing problems as a long free-kick from Dodd is just too long and goes out for a Pompey goal-kick

Mistake by Dodd gives Stone the chance to cross. Yakubu wins the header at the far post but a foul is called against him

Phillips tries his luck from a long, long way out and, whilst it is on target, it never troubles Hislop

A little bit of needle coming into the match as the tackles continue to bite

Smertin breaks into acres of space on the right but his first time cross is wasteful

Taylor wins possession 35 yards out from goal and swings his right foot at it. The result shows just how left footed he is as the ball flies well over the crossbar and into the crowd

Yakubu pulled up for offside - again

Southampton just starting to get back into it after suffering a spell of intense Pompey pressure

Yakubu is clear on goal from a ball over the top but is flagged offside

Phillips pulls out wide right and sends in a quick cross towrds the near post. Deplap is arriving and tries to angle a header to the far corner but only manages to put it a long way wide of the mark

The noise level, if not the skill level of the game has been consistently high

A carbon copy chance for Delap who this time beats the dive of Hislop but the drive is a foot wide of the left hand post

First Southampton strike on goal. Delap is given plenty of time and space outside the area to line up a shot. Low and hard but Hislop is well positioned to make the save

If they don't score soon, Portsmouth only have themselves to blame. This time Sherringham gets a clear sight of goal, in space, in the box, but can't control the pass and fumbles the opportunity.

Again, Yakubu wastes a glorious chance to score. Through on his own inside the box on the left he curls a shot beyond the reach of Niemi but also wide of the upright. Really, really should have scored - although replays show he should have been flagged offside

Portsmouth enjoying a good spell of pressure

Real chance for Pompey. Sherringham wins a knock down for Yakubu in the box. It is behind him but the striker has plenty of time to swing his leg round it. He does but the effort is weak and Neimi gratefully collects

Michael Svensson pulled a muscle in the warm up and his place will be taken by Stephen Crainey - Fitz Hall promoted to the bench.
