Phew! I don't know about you, but I'm shattered after that. What started out as a bland stalemate evolved through the second-half and into extra-time into a barnstorming affair with chances at both ends, but no goals. Penalties settled it. What a terrible way to loose a...hang on, unless you are Swedish, that topped off a night of great tension and drama. Great stuff.
...and he does!!! Slots it home like their is no pressure at all. Keeper had no chance and it is the Dutch who progress
If Robben puts this away his team are through....
... it is saved! Nice hieght for van der Saar but still a decent save. 4-4
We are with the players who didn't expect to take one. The first is Mellberg and...
Last of the ten, Makaay, puts it away and it's 4-4.
Sweden in front again! Wihelmsson calmly slots it home. 4-3

Possession
Cocu keeps the scores level by hitting the post. All square and it's sudden death now. 3-3
...and scores, just. Hits the bar but comes back and hits the keeper and goes in. 3-3. Crikey!
Ljungberg steps up....
3-2 now. Reiziger side foots it to the keeper's left sending him the wrong way
Oh no! First miss of the night as Ibrahimovic skies it al a Beckham. And the spot didn't move and inch. Still 2-2
All square again as Heitinga passes the test. 2-2
Larsson against van der Saar: No problem. High and wide of the keeper. 2-1 Sweeden (who have been in a shoot out actually in the 94 world cup against Romania that they won. Sorry about that)
1-1. Van Nistlerooy does not mess about and gives the keeper no chance
Goal, 1-0 Sweden. Keeper went the right way but it was wide enough to still go in
Sweden to go first with Kallstorm facing van der Saar
What started out as a timid, disappointing affair came to life when the 90 minutes had elapsed. Sweden hit the post twice and the Dutch had a number of chances to settle it but it was not to be. Sweden have never been involved in a shoot-out at a major competition but the Dutch have - going out that way in the last three European championships. No pressure then...
Penalties it is then. Not a goal between them in 120 minutes but it has to be settled somehow. I hope the penalty spots are more durable than for the first quarter-final
Despite serving up a turgid 90 minutes you can't fault either side for their endeavour in the extra periods. End to end stuff
Ball pinging around the Swedish box leads to a cry from the Dutch players for a handball. Would have been a hell of a decision for the ref to give it and also a wrong one. Nothing comes from the appeal. Heart in the mouth time for those wearing yellow
Larssons corner provides a cracking chance for Mellberg. Arriving late he gets to the ball ahead of his marker but his header is wayward. Should have doen better
We just aren't going to get a goal! Free kick forward into the Dutch box seesKallstrom distract the defence into a weak clearance that falls to an unmarked Ljungberg in the 'D'. His low, considered effort is wide of van der Saar but again strikes the upright and is shepherded behind for a corner
Makaay earns himself a yellow card by cynically halting the path of the ever forward thinking Kallstrom
Tense, tense stuff now from both sides as penalties loom large
Up at the other end: A ball slung into the box sets panic stations in the Dutch defence. Ball squirms around until Larsson picks it up, back to goal 10 yards out and swivles to get a shot away. Van der Saar is nowhere but the ball strikes the bar and flys out. We're getting closer and closer
Holland have won it! But wait, not hey haven't. Van Nistlerooy has the ball in the back of the net after some desperate defending from Sweden allows the ball to fall to first Robben and then, after a short, slick pass to van Nistlerooy. the whistle went before he struck it but it was a great finish. They do know where the net is after all....
Still the Dutch come. A return ball into the box finds Cocu unmarked a few yards out but he can't direct his header on target. The worst miss of the two
Corner from the right by Robben clears the crowd in the box and lands right at the feet of an unmarked Makaay. Tries to hit it first time on the half volley but gets his feet caught up and the ball ricochets to safety
Blistering shot from Seedorf. Looked all the way a goal until Isaksson flew across his goal and with a strong, single hand, hooked it away with the help of a defender following in. Great shot, better save
The all too common sight of van Nistlerooy falling over is still in evidence. This time, on the edge of the box, he was lining up a shot but then decided a free-kick would be more favourable. Or he was upended, depending on you allegiances
Anyone's game here. Both sides have threatened their opponents goal and both have looked vulnerable at the back. 15 minutes from penalties, something the Dutch in particular would probably like to avoid
No silver goal as the whistle goes for the turn around
Mellberg sents a hopeful ball into the box that is only partially cleared and falls to Kallstrom. He gets hold of it but the poweful shot ripples the wrong side of the net from his point of view
Kallstrom it is who steps up to shoot but it goes well over the bar in the style of a David Beckham penalty
Ljungberg takes up the initiative and skips over a challenge in the centre of the pitch (surprised he didn't go down to be honest). Couple of step-overs and he loses control under a second challenge earning a free kick in shooting range
Possession is still with the Dutch and a quick cross from the right pings at the feet of van Nistlerooy, now on the penalty spot. His volleyed connection is good but the ball fizzes wide of the target
Robben and vanh Nistlerooy, Holland's most dangerous combination, combine once more and a square lay off from the Man Utd man into the path of Seedorf is excellent. Seedorf doesn't need asking twice and a thuderous daisy cutter stings the palms of Isaksson. Great save
Stam proving his worth as twice in quick succession he clears from his own six yard box under pressure from Larsson.
Holland's turn to be pinned in their own final third
Ibrahimovic perhaps had cause for a penalty claim. Flicked cross from Kallstrom is helped on by the head of Larsson and the striker looked to be held slightly as he tried in vain to get on the end of it. Would have been harsh and the Swedish players hardly appealed
As with the pattern of normal time a close call has been followed up with a couple of minutes of scrappy play punctuated with petty fouls from both teams
How close, how close! Robben, receiving a crisp pass from van Nistlerooy, goes for goal from wide of the corner of the Swedish box. Packed with power the ball swerves all over the place and Isaksson spills it and the ball carries onto the post and comes out jsut wide of Makaay following up.
Good pressure from Kallstrom forces Heitinga into conceding a throw deep in his own half but the momentum is lost and possession given away
Extra-time gets going with both sides looking for a silver goal inthis first 15 minutes of play
The second-half was an improvement on the first but still neither team did enough to mark themselves out as a deserved winner. At least there was some goalmouth action and both teams have made positive substitutions.
Whistle goes and, despite Holland's efforts in the last couple of minutes, the game ends without a goal. Extra-time: just what everyone wanted, eh?
Makaay comes within a wisker of avoiding extra-time with a rasping, swerving shot from just outside the box. The keeper was beaten but the curve of the ball took it inches high and wide.
Corner after corner; cross after cross and it is the Dutch who are finishing strongest. Ball is cleared and allows Reiziger a free drive from distance that gets a deflection that wrong foots Isaksson but spins agonisingly wide
Swedes just can't clear their lines. Ball in from the right has the defence scambling and Nilsson calmly heads over his own bar when in danger of finding his own net
Free kick swung into the box and van Nistlerooy looks favourite until Isaksson arrives with a timely and strong punch
Another name in the ref's notebook as Linderoth clatters van Nistlerooy
Pefectly weighted through ball from Larsson releases Wilhelmsson into the box but out comes van der Saar to save at his feet. Flag had been raised in any case
Substitution from Holland: Off goes van der Meyde to be replaced by Makaay. We've got enough attack minded players on the pitch now to get a goal surely
Who's got the bottle to go for the kill in these dying moments? The Dutch were on top but Sweden are dangerous near then end: just ask an Italian
The substitute involved again. Ball into the box is flicked on by Larsson and then helped further on its way by the head of Ibrahimovic. Kallstrom arrives at the back stick and goes for goal but Reiziger has tracked him and blocks well. Better though from Sweden as the game enters the last 10 minutes
Kallstrom demonstrates his natural inclination by picking up the ball out by the corner of the 18 yard box and going straight for goal. Shot is blocked but I like his style
Maybe this will change that. Off goes Svensson and in his place comes a more attack minded player in the form of Kallstrom
Wheter it's nerves or what I don't know but just as this game was coming to life both sides have started keeping it simple and unadventerous
Van der Meyde looking to force the issue down the right but Nilsson is often getting the better of him and does once more on this ocassion
Robben becomes the latest to let himself down with some theatrics. Shame on you. And the free kick went the other way. Ha!
Space finally opening up in the middle of the pitch as both sides tire a little
Ibrahimovic carries the ball well after holding off a challenge. Inter-passing involving Larsson and Linderoth eventually threads the ball through the back line for Ljungberg. Fantastic turn sets up the shot but he drags it wide of the near post. Great stuff and really unlucky for Ljungberg who was falling as he shot
Wonderful stuff from Sweden almost breaks the deadlock
Isaksson doe swell to take the ball from the head of van Nistlerooy at the near post after van Bronckhorst's run and cross from the byline
Wilhelmsson is unlucky to see his work come to nothing. Receiving a long pass over his shoulder on the right he quickly put a low cross into the box but Ibrahimovic did not read it and get forward
Linderoth is getting through a massive amount of work for the Swedes both going forward and defensively as Holland start to gain the upper hand
Van der Meyde cuts in from the right and plays a square long ball to Robben. He can't control but Seedorf wins it back on the edge of the box and sets up a shot for Robben. Little time and little back-lift results in a disappointing effort, blocked by Mellberg
As the temperature falls in the early evening the temperature of the game rises. At last both teams seem to have realised just what is at stake here. Long may it continue
Stam, in more familiar territory, snuffs out a chanc efor Ibrahimovic to break into space on the right. The Swede is furious he didn't get the ball sooner as he would have had half the pitch to play in
Amazing, surging run from Stam. All the way from in his own half the big man skips past a couple of challenges until he finds himself on the edge of the box. Hits a powerful low drive that would do credit to a striker but it goes just the wrong side of the right hand upright. Others should look and learn
Forced substitution from the Swedes. Jonson limps off and is replaced by Wilhelmsson
At the other end a quick break and cross presents Svensson with a shooting chance, though not a comfortable one, that is well defended. End to end stuff. At last
Glorious pass over the top from Seedorf picks out the run of van Nistlerooy. He brings the ball down expertly and shoots but the keeper is out at his feet well. The ricochet hits van Nistlerooy again and very, very nearly goes in. Quality move and deserved more
Curious change from the Dutch as Davids makes way for Heitinga. He presumably will go to the deep position occupied by Cocu with Cocu moving into Davids' role
The odd flash of invention and goalmouth action but such incidents are still too few to constitute a decent game of football
Controversy as Ibrahimovic crumbles under a weak challenge in the box. Those in yellow scream for a penalty but the referee choses this point in the game to clamp down on 'simulation'. Free kick to Holland and a yellow card for Ibrahimovic
Cross from the right sees Larsson leap well to head across goal from the far post. Too much angle but Ibrahimovic supports well and fires and angled shot across van der Saar goalwards but a dramatic goal line clearance denies him a goal. The Dutch at sixes and sevens and a real chance for Sweden
Quick feet from Svensson sets up a shot for Ljungberg but it is blocked. Sweden reatin possession however
As you were again as possession isexchanged cheaply between the two sides
Van der Saar called into action outside his box as a long clearance almost sets Ibrahimovic away. Good, alert reading of the game from the Dutch stopper
The Dutch have started the second period with some purpose. Van der Meyde does well to put over a cross from the right but it is just behind a stretching van Nistlerooy and he can't control it
Van Nistlerooy leaps to win a great flick on to Robben. The return pass looks to have set him free on goal but a sloid recovering tackle from Jakobsson blocks his path
Hopeful punt forward from the back almost puts Larsson free in the box but the ball carries into the grateful arms of van der Saar
Clash between Nilsson and van der Meyde sees the Swede come off worse. Van der Meyde's foot was pretty high and he is cautioned for the foul
Van Nistlerooy again causing problems and tries an inventive 'Ibrahimovic' with a flicked back heel attempt on goal but without success
Glorious chance for Holland and van Nistlerooy. Robben jinks and turns on the left to evade a pair of markers and swings over a delicious cross. Van Nistlerooy had found space between the two centre backs and looked a cert to open the scoring but the ball flew off his shoulder ond over the bar. Goes down as a miss
Dutch get us started again with niether side having made a change
A bit of a stop-start, nervy quarter final this one. Neither team has really impressed though there is definitely more to come from them both. The Dutch came closest to scoring through Robben and have had a touch more possession but the Swedes look quite good countering. 0-0 sums it up really. A goal will change the match completely (I hope)
Whistle goes and the half draws to a close still goal-less
Shot from distance from Svensson is straight and true but van der Saar has taken up a good position and it is straight down his throat
Ostlund literally gives blood for the cause as, in the process of tackling van Nistlerooy gets caught on the face by the Dutchman's trailing boot. I think he'll be ok
Seedorf stands over it alone and tries to curl a shot to the far top corner. Not on target but a decent enough attempt
Robben is sandwiched by a pair of Swedish defenders on the left corner of the box. Free kick in a very dangerous spot
A bit of anger at least. Cross from Robben is too high and van Nistlerooy, under no contact AT ALL, tumbles to the ground as if stabbed. Quite simply: he cheated. And the Swedish defence on mass is incensed and motion for the referee to card the Man Utd striker. Ref waves their protests away
Same again. Short corner and run into the box is blocked before the ball is turned over once more. Diagonal cross field pass goes for a goal kick. Someone really needs to get a grip on this game: scrappy, slow and dull. There, I said it
Corner is a poor one but somehow Holland retain possession and come again, winning another corner on the opposite side of the pitch.
Another long throw from Reiziger causes a little panic in the Swedish back line and Mellberg needlessly concedes a corner
De Boer can't continue. After fouling Ljungberg savagely he is replaced by Bouma. Poetic justice anyone?
Pace of the game is slowly picking up but it is hardly sparkling
Play switches up the other end and a speculative 25 effort from Cocu is nervously punched over the bar by Isaksson, virtually on his knees. Didn't look too difficult a save but maybe it swerved in the air
Delivery is good and van der Saar flaps at it and misses. His blushes are spared by a recovering header from van Bronckhorst
Bit of push and shove in the wall before Jakobsson tries to curl one over the wall. He fails as the wall does its job at the expense of a corner
Both players are forced off the pitch in some pain but I think they will both be back
First yellow card of the evening as de Boer, studs up, slides through Ljungberg right on the edge of the box. Nasty challenge and he deserved the caution.
Larsson wins the near corner competition to flick the cross on but no one is able to capitalise
Dutch in the ascendancy but a casual dummy from van der Meyde on the edge of the box gives away possession and Sweden power up field to earn a corner. They look dangerous when they get forward at pace
Great stuff from the Dutch. Robben, cutting in from the left feeds van Nistlerooy who is marked on the edge of the area with his back to goal. He spots the run of Reiziger down the right and lays the ball into his path. The right back hits it sweetly but the drive is marginally wide. Unlucky
Larsson steps up to take it but it has neither the direction or pace to trouble van der Saar. He can do a lot better than that
Ljungberg again powers forward but falls to the ground under next to no pressure from van Bronckhorst. Free kick in a dangerous position outside the area
Ljungberg tries to shake things up by dropping deep and then surging forward trying to get on the end of a ball over the top. Comes to nothing but it is more positive
Holland seem content to let Sweden have the ball in the middle of the pitch, seeking to deny space for Larsson and Ibrahimovic - and it's working. Both strikers in quick succession have come deep to recieve the ball and they are no use to their side in the centre circle
Good football from Sweden down the left as Nilsson is encouraged to venture up field for the first time. Throw in is all he gets but at least they have some time in the Dutch half
All football matches need goals - this one is begging for one
Long throw into the box from Reiziger bounces over Cocu but it runs through to van Nistlerooy with his back to goal, surrounded by yellow shirts. Tries to turn and get a shot away but as he does his path is blocked and chance passes
A worry for the Swedish as Ibrahimovic goes to the sideline to clear up some bleeding on his left leg
Wrong. Short lay off by Davids and Seedorf unleashes a rasping drive on target. Simple enough though for the keeper to position himself for the save
Free kick for Holland dead centre but a good 40 yards out. A shot from there? Surely not
At the moment Cocu is playing virtually as a sweeper, just in front of the back four whilst Robben and van der Meyde have switched wings twice already. Advocaat has been watching Portugal in this tournament I suspect...
Cagey and intriguing so far as both sides feel each other out
Sweden counter attack at pace and the strength of Ibrahimovic troubles the Dutch back line as he muscles his way into the box but his control lets him down as the ball runs out of play
First genuine attempt on goal and it's a great one. Robben cuts in from the right and, from the corner of the box, powers a left footed drive goalwards. Isakssson though is equal to it and turns it round for a corner in acrobatic style. Cracking shot, cracking save
Neat approach play from Holland ferries the ball out wide right to Reiziger. Opts to drill a cross over and it nearly comes off by landing in the path of Seedorf but unfortunately the power means he can't control and it goes for a goal kick
Slow opening in front of one of the most garish crowds I've ever seen at a football match. Orange and yellow don't go well together
Clever long free kick from Seedorf picks out Davids at the far side of the box. His cushioned centre nearly finds van Nistlerooy but a combination of Swedish defenders nullify the threat.
Free kick is slung into the box with Cocu the nearest recipient before Isaksson comes to puch well clear.
Jakobsson lets van Nistlerooy know he is about early on by climbing up him to meet a high ball with the predictable outcome being a free kick in the Dutchman's favour. Little bit of niggling as the two lay on the floor. Should be an interesting personal battle.
Slight hold up in play as van Bronkhorts recieves treatment. He is alright soon enough and away we go again...
van Bronkhorst and Ibrahimovic duel in the Dutch box with the result a free-kick to the men in Orange as the striker catches van Bronkhorst's ankle
The game kicks off and twice in the opening minute van der Meyde seeks out van Nistlerooy and twice his cross is blocked
With a giant of European football (and England) falling every day so far this week, can Holland avoid an early trip home at the hands of a spritly and organised Sweden tonight...
