England against San Marino

Corner ball for England, Walker the man to win it.

England still streaming forward. Remember, they beat Moldova 5-0 too so I'm sure they'd be keen for a better result.

Welbeck named the sponsors' man of the match. Don't think I could have chosen one really. No stand-out England performers. Probably would pick Simoncini despite his concession of five goals.

The realisation has dawned on me that there are a number of San Marino players who have yet to be mentioned in this commentary. So this one's for them: Palazzi, Davide Simoncini, Alessandro Della Valle, Michele Cervellini, Cristian Brolli, Enrico Cibelli, Matteo Coppini - these guys have also been on the field today.

Bacciocchi on for Vitaioli

Decent effort from Shelvey as he demonstrates twinkle-toes to open up space for a left-foot shot. Low but not troubling the keeper.

And in the other game in this group, Moldova have sensationally held Ukraine to a 0-0 draw. Superb result for the Moldovans, and England of course.

Just to put this result in perspective, Germany are currently beating Ireland 6-1. In Ireland.

Bow down to this man. San Marino's all-time leading scorer (with eight goals) and the scorer of their only ever winning goal in an international.

Carroll heads it goalwards but he's penalised for climbing all over Palazzi

England 5-0 San Marino. Clipped into the far corner first time from a tight angle. Really pleasant on the eye that finish.

GOAL Oxlade-Chamberlain with a smart finish. First England goal.

I read that last post back and it sounded a bit patronising. But I genuinely meant it sincerely.

International debut for the young student. I have a feeling he will remember this one for a long time.

Buscarini on for Coppini

Gasperoni flicks it clear.

Shelvey strike deflected. I make this a 15th corner for England.

I fear the dream of San Marino victory may be over.

Joe Hart takes the captain's armband. Surely Rooney would have been keen to bag a hat-trick?

Carroll on for Rooney

England 4-0 San Marino. Cleverley pulls it back and Welbeck with a more straightforward finish than his first-half effort from close range.

GOAL Welbeck. Well that worked well.

We had two goals in three minutes in the first half, the fingers are tightly crossed.

England 3-0 San Marino. Rooney curls it in from the edge of the area after Lennon's for his 31st England goal. He's now fifth on the list of all-time leading Three Lions scorers.

GOAL Rooney bends it in to make it three.

Still England probe around the edge of the area but the frustration continues.

Stats: An England player has scored four goals in each of the last two games against San Marino with David Platt and Ian Wright the men to claim them.

Shelvey on for Carrick

A shot, though. A San Marino shot as I live and breathe.

Cahill's closed back in though and Rinaldi fires wide.

Rinaldi's in behind Cahill now...

Danilo Rinaldi goes into the book.

Jonjo Shelvey set for his England debut by the looks of it.

I think it's time to admit defeat in the 8-0 pre-match prediction.

Lovely curling free-kick from Baines, but narrowly too high,

Pretty sure the San Marino defence won't fancy coming up against big Andy.

Free-kick for England on the right, about 25 yards out. Wonder if Carroll will be coming on soon to shake things up a bit.

Cahill penalised for a shove from the umpteenth corner of the game. Come on San Marino!

Wave after wave of England attack - can't believe there's not been another goal. I'm thinking of starting to support San Marino for the hell of it.

Rooney and Welbeck absolutely loving the one-twos, although it's more like one-two-three-fours really. Regular exchanges as they try desperately to slice through the ten men standing on the edge of the box.

Baines with a searching cross, but Lennon tried some sort of bizarre shoulder/chest control rather than trying to head it goalwards.

Oxlade-Chamberlain again thwarted by Simoncini.

I think i just spotted a rare pair of consecutive passes from San Marino. If my eyes weren't deceiving me then bravo lads.

Carrick fires a fizzed pass into Rooney, who tries in vain to play a cute pass through to Welbeck.

Rooney floate a delicate ball into Cahill, who fluffs his lines as he attempts to steer a volley home.

Great interchanges, best piece of football from England so far, results in a Carrick shot that, somewhat unsurprisingly, goes out for a corner.

Marauding run from the Ox but it ends in dispossession not delight.

Cleverley looks for Welbeck but he can't get it under control. That was more direct at least.

It's just all a bit messy. England's players look bored, and it's being reflected in the football on show.

Stats: Roy Hodgson has not lost any of his nine previous matches as England boss.

England again getting in and around the penalty area but the decisive pass is regularly lacking.

News coming through that Walcott has been taken to hospital with a chest injury.

Walker in loads of space on the right wing but it's a really poor touch by him.

Plenty of seats free around the Club Wembley hospitality area - I probably wouldn't swap lobster and champagne for England v San Marino either!

And they're off. Bring on the goals...

Right, brace yourselves. Here we go again.

A few of the other scores from around Europe for you and England aren't alone in their struggles against a smaller side. Faore Islands gave Sweden a scare before Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the winner in a 2-1 victory, while Italy were held at 1-1 by Armenia for a while, until De Rossi and Osvaldo secured a 3-1 win.

As usual, I want to hear your thoughts on the game, so give me a shout on Twitter - @marklomasESPN - if you are stll awake!

HT: England 2-0 San Marino. More a gentle meow than a roar from the Three Lions so far as the minnows have stood firm. England needed a penalty from captain Rooney to make the breakthrough, but it took over half an hour to come. Welbeck's second makes it slightly more acceptable but all the credit must go to San Marino for keeping the score down.

There's the half-time whistle.

Oxlade strikes but it's scuffed into the grateful grasp of Simoncini.

A few minutes of injury-time being played for Walcott's injury.

Cleverley pitches the ball towards Welbeck, who controls well on his chest but can't finish with quite the same aplomb.

Lennon looked to be hauled down by Della Valle inside the area but it's no penalty.

Rooney opens up space on the edge of the area but curls a shot wide.

Simoncini has really won my admiration tonight. What an enigma. Think I've written his name more than any other in fact. Ahhh, Simoncini.

Stats: England have only lost twice in their last 36 home World Cup qualifiers, winning 26 and drawing eight.

Rooney tries to bend one in but Simoncini does well to palm it out. Really smart save.

And here's the Mexican Wave - or as I like to call it 'the sign that a match is so boring, the fans have top keep themselves entertained in other ways'

Phew, at least that 7-0 prediction of mine is looking a bit more feasible now. Wouldn't want my professional pride hurt.

Superb turn by Oxlade-Chamberlain to escape down the left but the move breaks down.

ENGLAND 2-0 SAN MARINO. Lennon pulls it back and it's a carbon-copy of his goal against Sweden at Euro 2012, back flick beyond Simoncini.

GOAL Welbeck with a delightful flick.

Welbeck nearly turns in Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross but can't quite get it goalwards.

Simoncini was booked for bringing down Welbeck for the penalty.

ENGLAND 1-0 SAN MARINO. Smashed past Simoncini, who did dive the right way. Will that open the floodgates?

GOAL Rooney opens the scoring.

Rooney to step up. Here comes the captain...

Welbeck fouled, penalty England.

Welbeck hits the post with the rebound, looked certain to score.

Carrick smashes the crossbar with an effort from 20-yards, would have been a great goal.

Wide! Inches to the left of the post.

Rooney diving header from Cleverley's cross...

Baines wins a corner. A convincing punch clear by Simoncini.

San Marino have only got to half-time in an away match without conceding three times EVER. They last achieved that feat seven years ago. Food for thought.

Oxlade-Chamberlain tries his luck from distance again. High over the bar.

Jagielka fouled and it's a quick free-kick for England.

A little too intricate on the edge of the area as shots from Cahill and Carrick come in in quick succession.

Guess what England have got...yup, another corner.

Very, very flat atmosphere. And not surprising. Resolute defending from San Marino though, belying their ranking of 207.

Nearly a howler from Simoncini as a long ball over the top looked like bouncing over his head for a second.

Baines' cross loops up in the air and Rooney heads over. It was a difficult ball to try to steer towards goal.

England's full-backs essentially both playing as second wingers at the moment. They're pushed so far up.

Oxlade-Chamberlain fizzes one goalwards and Simoncini - determined to hang on to this clean sheet, does enough to push it away.

England trying to be patient but the occasion demands a goal really.

ANOTHER corner for England. Walker tried his luck from about 30 yards. Very optimistic.

Taken quickly but San Marino manage to clear their lines. Resolute stuff from the minnows and they've nearly made it halfway through the first half without conceding. Unthinkable before kick-off.

Lennon probes on the edge of the box, the ball comes to Rooney and his curling shot is defletced for a corner.

San Marino again foraging in the England hald after winnning a free-kick but dealt with easily by the Three Lions.

Walker's turn to cross after getting in some space but Simoncini is there again to claim the cross. Pretty assured from the San Marino goalkeeper.

No goal here yet, but there's others around Europe and you can join Chris Borg for live updates and chat from the UEFA World Cup qualifiers.

A few loose passes around, it's a bit of a strange atmosphere this one. Like a very poor quality training game.

Simoncini with a really impressive claim but he's kicked it out and England are heading back on the attack.

Baines down the left, he swings in a cross and it's deflected unconvincingly out for a corner.

Another touch for Hart and another sarcastic bout of clapping.

Stats: A goal for Rooney would put him on 30 England strikes, level with Nat Lofthouse, Alan Shearer and Tom Finney on the all-time scorers list.

First touch of the game for Joe Hart - sarcastic applause goes up for the England No. 1.

Pretty hushed at Wembley, 90,000 unimpressed supporters so far.

Gasperoni looked to have a chance to break away - pretty much the first time San Marino have stepped inside the England half. But a heavy touch let him down.

Rooney wins the header but he can't direct it goalwards and it trickles wide.

Baines with the inswinger, but Vitaioli and Rooney told to calm their exchanges first.

Lennon with an immediate impact getting to the byline but Fabio Vitaioli does well to get down and block the attempted cross. England corner.

Neat exchange between Rooney and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Walker threads a ball through to Cleverley but it's just overhit.

Lennon the man to come on for a disappointed Walcott.

Walcott going to be replaced. My guess is concussion.

Hodgson still looks outraged at the collision and there's certainly a worry for Walcott. He's on his feet now but I think he may well have been knocked out.

Stats: San Marino last tasted victory in an international match on April 27, 2004 when they beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in a friendly.

Simoncini at the heart of things again, colliding with Theo Walcott as the England man lifted it over him. Looked a painful one. Not quite Harald Schumacher-esque but still nasty. He's still down.

Simoncini has conceded 114 goals in his 28 internationals for San Marino.

Tidy save from Aldo Simoncini from Oxlade-Chamberlain's 25-yard strike.

Corner for England, to be take by Carrick.

Welbeck with a tasty early flick as England pile on the pressure. Showboating already?! Where's the respect...

England through the first eight seconds and no goal. That is an improvement on the last meeting in 1993 already.

We're off...

Moments from kick-off now. I'm going to stick my neck out and predict 7-0. There, I did it.

@Every_ThingMUFC on Twitter: one of the biggest shocks? I think it will be THE greatest shock if it was to happen!

Anthems are sung, the players are out - what a cracking night this is for these San Marino players. Thanks to reduced ticket prices, Wembley is remarkably a 90,000 sell-out tonight.

England fans, look away now. In a game that saw the end of the Three Lions' hopes of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup, San Marino celebrated one of their finest football moments. They may have lost 7-1 at home, but Davide Gualtieri's goal just 8.3 seconds after kick-off remains a record. Read all about it here.
