Real Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur

Pepe turns Ozil's corner over the bar. Not a bad effort.

Bassong prods the ball behind for a corner.

You'd give Spurs no chance whatsoever of coming back from this in the second leg but, although Madrid have been far superior on the night, the dismissal of Peter Crouch will be viewed as the defining moment.

Ronaldo squeezes a shot under Gomes as he swings his leg at Kaka's cross. He's done well from a tight angle, but Gomes should have saved that.

The corner is played short but an offside is awarded from the return pass.

Assou-Ekotto tackles Kaka and a corner is awarded.

Kaka loses the ball on an attacking forway and Dawson launches a ball forwards, but Spurs just don't have the options in attack with ten men.

Ramos receives the ball in the area and flashes it across the face of goal, but it's out of play and a goal kick to Spurs.

It's hard to imagine how the evening could have gone much worse for Spurs really - the injuries stacking up won't help their bid to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Alonso lifts the ball into the area but it's an easy catch for Gomes.

Ronaldo races down the right, makes some space and crosses in, but it's an easy catch for Gomes.

A mistake by Pepe allows Bale through but Carvalho makes a fine saving tackle.

Adebayor has now scored ten goals in ten games against Spurs.

Madrid win a corner and, after the ball comes to Marcelo, Adebayor, once more, is left unmarked to head home.

Spurs hold onto the ball in the Madrid half for a while, but Defoe is offside. Spurs will need to do more of that if they're to keep Madrid at bay.

Marcelo, who's been excellent tonight, plays a really poor, aimless pass down the left.

Assou-Ekotto goes fairly close with a shot on the bounce from distance. Decent stuff from the left-back.

Bale unleashes a shot from out on the left and Spurs win a corner.

Ronaldo finds Adebayor in the area and he tries a lay-off but Spurs defend well.

Marcelo fires in a low shot and Ronaldo deflects it over the bar. Spurs are hanging on here but Madrid just can't quite make it happen.

Much better from Ronaldo: he fires away a fierce left-footed shot into the side netting from the edge of the area.

Ramos bursts down the right and centres the ball, but it's cleared. Gallas doesn't seem to be limping anymore.

Gallas is now limping. The evening hasn't gone as hoped for Redknapp.

Ozil looks to run clear down the right early on, but he takes the ball out of play.

Spurs get the second half underway!

The players are now heading out of the tunnel.

Incidentally, the referee - Felix Brych - is the man who sent off Jamie O'Hara in the 2-0 defeat to Udinese in 2008. He picked up two bookings in a minute for rash challenges, so it's not like Crouch and Spurs didn't have any warning that he wouldn't show clemency.

Dawson's handball came after the ball had deflected up from his thigh. His hands were still high, but it's mitigation and - as with most of his decisions tonight - it's hard to fault the ref.

It's now looking like 1-0 will be a decent result for Spurs if they can hang on. They're very much on the ropes as far as the tie is concerned.

Spurs are probably fortunate to be just one goal down after almost everything went wrong for them early on: Lennon's injury, Adebayor's goal, Crouch's red card.

That's half time.

Adebayor is dispossessed on the edge of the area before Ronaldo sees a shot blocked. Spurs break but Ramos cynically nudges Bale off the ball. No yellow card, surprisingly.

There'll be one added minute.

Van der Vaart's corner misses absolutely everyone and ends up finding Jenas deep on the right flank.

Spurs win a corner to alleviate the pressure.

Ronaldo's now appealing for a free-kick but it's a goal kick. The ref's got that right.

The corner is cleared.

Di Maria fires a shot in on the edge of the area and Dawson blocks it with his hands! It would have been harsh, perhaps, but it did look a penalty.

Marcelo nods the ball back for Adebayor in front of goal but he's blocked off. That was a great chance, and Marcelo could have taken it on himself.

Ronaldo's free-kick is rotten. His shooting tonight has been pretty wretched so far, even if he's looked sharp on the ball.

Madrid win a free-kick out on the right flank but Spurs get it clear and release Bale for the first time. The winger is blocked off before he can do any damage, though.

This time the corner's cleared at the near post.

A slightly nervous-sounding Harry Redknapp has said that he wants to use the pace of Bale and Lennon on the counter-attack to hurt Madrid but added: "The plan is to make sure we stay in the game tonight."

In a pre-match interview with Sky, Jose Mourinho's said Spurs are the most improved team in England since he left but that he is ready for the big occasion. "I'm much more comfortable in big moments than ordinary moments," he said.

Madrid's attack will be spearheaded by Emmanuel Adebayor, with Gonzalo Higuain only deemed fit enough for the bench after making his long-awaited return at the weekend.

Peter Crouch, unsurprisingly, leads the line for Spurs, with Rafael van der Vaart in just behind as he looks to prove a point to his former employers.

Spurs are boosted by the return of William Gallas at centre-back, and he partners Michael Dawson. Sandro - who excelled against Milan - gets the nod in central midfield alongside Luka Modric.

Left-back Marcelo and winger Angel Di Maria also start for Madrid having been considered doubtful, while Xabi Alonso is back from the suspension that kept him out of the 1-0 home defeat to Sporting Gijon at the weekend.

The big news is that both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale start the game. Whether they're fit enough to live up to the massive pre-match expectations, of course, is another matter.

Hello and welcome to the live commentary for tonight's game at the Bernabeu.
