Chelsea against Real Betis

Cole comes forward on the right, but he ignores the intelligent running of Crespo and instead hits a tame shot, off target, which Doblas can claim

Another free-kick for Chelsea on the right. Lampard, as usual, takes and this time Terry is within a whisker of making contact with his head

Corner to Betis now. Joaquin trudges over to the right to deliver but Juanito can only head it away from the goal

Gallas shows great strength to hold off Xisco, but again he is felled by the Betis substitute

The ref has to calm it down and in the end hands a booking to both Xisco and Gallas

Xisco and Gallas challenge for a ball in front of the bench, and the Chelsea man gets the decision. But Xisco takes exception to something and shoves the Frenchman - and then it's handbags as the two push and shove

Oliveira crosses from the right for the head of Edu, his header from the edge of the box lacks venom and it directly into the arms of Cudicini

Despite the scoreline, Betis have not wilted and continue to look for a way to get on the scoresheet. Credit to them.

Juanito fouls Gudjohnsen in midfield, free-kick

Cole now looks for options on the right of the box. He spots Gudjohnsen free at the back stick - his first time volley is saved and the second crashes back off the post - oh, hold on, the flag was up for offside

Chelsea hand a debut to Lassana Diarra, a summer signing from Le Havre, in place of Claude Makelele

Cole breaks down the right, and passes first time without looking up. Crespo is far post rather than near enabling Doblas to pick up

Essien goes in two-footed to win the ball ahead of Rivera. Shades of Tal Ben Haim there - this time he won the ball but it's still a free-kick for dangerous play

Xisco attempts a speculative shot from 25-yards. Ambitious to say the least and well over

Gudjohnsen looks to be through on goal - but he's a mile offside from the pass by Makelele

No! Joaquin is booked for diving! Del Horno did dive in a little, and though he did make contact with the Betis wide man it was perhaps the Spaniard deliberately moving into this leg-line. Still, a harsh booking and we've all seen them given

Betis break now, they have men over and Joaquin is fed in on the right of the box. He looks to get past Del Horno who goes down early - and then so does Joaquin. Penalty!

Essien delivers the ball out onto the right flank - but SWP is no longer on the pitch and the ball flies into nomansland and out for a throw!

Carvalho is felled by Oliveira - free-kick

Shaun Wright-Phillips gets a rest now with Eidur Gudjohnsen replacing him. There's a standing ovation for SWP as he leaves the pitch

Chelsea are rampant now, Betis crestfallen. Make that 13 goals in three games

What a goal! Great long-range pass from Lampard, fine first time cross from SWP, and the run of Crespo to the edge of the six yard box was perfection. Crespo nodded home with ease - he didn't even need to stoop. Vintage stuff

GOAL!!!

Varela has a crack from wide on the right - it's a wayward effort which pretty much sums up his performance

Cole opted not to pass, it looked as though he'd wasted the opening put produced a fine, curling effort into the far corner of the net - and now it's party time

GOAL!!!

Chelsea get the chance the break, a great tackle from Makelele. He finds Crespo, to Essien, to Cole. Surely Cole must feed Crespo in on goal...

Free-kick to Chelsea on the right, Lampard delivers put it's just behind Crespo and he can only direct his effort over the bar

Betis play with ten for now while Assuncao gets himself ready. He eventually replaces the injured Lozano Miguel Angel

The Betis bench are angry with the challenge, but there really was nothing in it - Angel simply had the ball taken off his boot and appeared to jar his knee

Angel is down in pain followng the clash for the 50-50 ball with Essien. The stretchers coming on - it doesn't look good for the Betis man

Angel is robbed by Essien, who strides forward for the shot - which is always rising over the bar

It's become a very dull affair in the second half. Betis trying to open up Chelsea with absolutely no success

Makelele brings down Edu, providing Joaquin with another chance to deliver into the penalty area. It's floated to the back stick - Xisco fails to get anything on the ball so Crespo clears his lines

Edu tries a powerful effort from 25-yards out, this time it's Terry with the brave block

Betis certainly look to have come out in the mindset to 'have a go'. But can they get any success?

Betis enjoyed the better of the play in the early stages of this half, just like in the first

Cole and Crespo begin the second period

Betis also make a change, Lopez replaced by Xisxo

Chelsea make a change at the break - Drogba is off injured and Crespo comes on

Varela has been a liability, giving the ball away several times and now in the book. Surely he must be replaced

Betis may have started well, but they faded badly as Chelsea took control of the game. Maybe a two-goal lead is slightly flattering, but you cannot make mistakes of the magnitude that we saw from Doblas

And that's half-time

SWP picks up the loose ball just outside the box and breaks forward his purpose. He goes past two, but not the third as Varela takes him out - and earns a booking in the process

Cole fells Edu, Betis could cause problems here. Juaquin finds the head of Oliveira, it takes a deflection for a corner. Juaquin takes again and it goes straight through

It was a regulation take for the Betis keeper, but he dropped the ball on his goal-line leaving Carvalho with the simple task of tapping home from - quite literally - inches out. A shocker for Doblas and surely it's too much for Betis to come back from

GOAL!!!

Melli is penalised for pulling at Cole's shirt. It's over on the left and a chance for Lampard to curl it dangerously into the area. He does just that but it's straight down the throat of Doblas...

Both Drogba and Rivas need treatment, with the Betis defender being shown a yellow card after getting back to his feet

Drogba is hacked the ground just outside the D by Rivas, the ref lets the game flow for Essien to have a shot but he shanks it into the stand

Betis may have had some promising moments in the opening 15 minutes but now they ate looking a beaten side - at 1-0

Terry gives away a corner. Joaquin delivers from the right only to find the head of first man Lampard

Drobga makes a good run down the left channel to get onto the ball, then spots Lampard's late run into the box - this time the England midfielder can only guide his first time shot over the top of the bar

Liverpool are ahead in the other game in this group, Cisse with the goal on 20 minutes

Chelsea play so many pretty patterns when passing around their own defence. It really is exciting

Rivera loops one to Oliveira in the box - a poor header on the stretch drifts well wide

Lopez has a punt from distance, which was hopeful to say the least - with the ball finishing up nearer the corner flag than the goal

SWP enters the book for a late challenge on Joaquin

SWP is tripped out on the right flank, a good position to curl one into the box. It's Lampard to take, opting to play it in low to Del Horno on the penalty spot, who gets a shot with his weaker right all wrong

Betis will need to find a reply now. They've looked exciting going forward but were ripped apart at the back for the opener

Fine pass from Essien when the wide ball to SWP was the easier option. Drogba took a touch to control the ball before firing past Doblas to break the deadlock. A cool finish from the Ivory Coast forward

GOAL!!!

Essien intercepts a poor pass from Varela in the centre of the park and bursts forward, he has free options both left and right and opts to play in Drogba through the centre...

The Chelsea players were calling for an offisde against Edu, who was free right in front of goal, but it was Drogba playing him on by strolling back from the byline - he was nearly the villain of the piece twice in quick succession

Now Betis break, there's a bit of a scramble in the box, Melli tries to hit one on the turn but doesn't get hold of it. The ball still lands at the feet of Edu six yards out - but his fails to connect and Chelsea survive

ARGH! How did he manage to miss that? All he needed to do was tap the ball home, but he somehow managed to get it all wrong - and his shot goes out for a throw - shocking miss, another for the Drogba collection

Essien feeds in SWP down the right, great ball, the England international breaks into the box and plays a superb square ball across the face of the six-yard area for Drogba...

Betis do look dangerous going forward, full of pace and technical ability

Oliveira does well to control and turn, he's got a man free to his left but opts of the speculative shot - easy for Cudicini and the wrong decision from the Betis man

Drogba does well to turn from Cole's throw-in, creating space for the shot, which is fired a couple of yards wide of the left-hand post

Cole produced a snap shot from the edge of the box, Doblas makes a good stop only for the ball to rebound back to the England midfielder - who hits his follow-up shot for a throw-in

...back it comes again to Joaquin on the left, he curls one to the edge of the six yard box and somehow two Betis players just fail to make contact

...Joaquin again takes the corner, again it's a good one, this time Melli can only divert it away from goal rather than towards it...

...It's a good header from Juanito but Gallas is on the line to hack away...

Corner to Betis, Joaquin takes but it comes to no more than another corner. It's Joaquin again, finding Juanito at the far post...

Oliveira wins a free-kick mid-way inside the Chelsea half. It's Joaquin who looks to curl one low into the box - Lampard sticks out a toe and the ball goes just past the post

There was a torrential downpour about two hours before kick-off and it hasn't stopped raining since - so there'll be a bit of zip off the turf

Chelsea are enjoying a lot of the ball in midfield and defence in these early stages

Cole does well to find space in the centre of the park and fine Wright-Phillips on the right with a neat ball. SWP cuts inside and opts for the shot - only for the effort to go wide of the far post. Good skill

Betis get us underway at a particularly wet Stamford Bridge.

Betis name Joaquin in their attack, along with Brazilian Ricardo Oliveira after the 24-year-old shook off a heavy cold. Joaquin was reportedly a Chelsea target last season and came into the game vowing to impress Blues boss Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich. Betis, who finished fourth in the Primera Liga last year and won the Copa del Rey, began their Champions League campaign with a home defeat to Liverpool but headed to Stamford Bridge on the back of a victory over Anderlecht.

Carlo Cudicini earns a surprise start in the Chelsea goal. The Italian replaces Petr Cech in the only change to the Chelsea side which started Saturday's 5-1 league victory over Bolton.
