Bayern Munich against Chelsea

Finally Bayern take one of their opportunities and it's square on the night 2-2.

Another bad miss from a Bayern man - they can't say they haven't had their chances. Looping cross found Pizarro about five yards out at the back post with plenty to aim at, but his header spooned over the bar. Doesn't matter now but a very poor effort.

Hold up in play as Terry is laid in some discomfort for a bit but, as you would expect, he is back on his feet before long.

Cole, who has had a very productive and impressive game, is still full of running and finds the energy to chase down a Kovac back-pass.

Gudjohnsen will be able to take his pick of the showers and soap as he makes way for Geremi (remember him?).

Bayern fans are leaving in their droves now and, to be fair, you can hardly blame them.

A great cross field ball from Lampard looked to have given Cole a chance to run the clock down in the corner whilst support arrived. Instead he cut back and gave Drogba the sort of cross strikers like him dream of. Either Chelsea are through or we (sorry, I) am about to see the most exciting ten minutes of football of my life.

It's goodnight Vienna, or, rather, goodnight Munich. A towering angled header from Drogba leaves Kahn statuesque and Chelsea have the lead on the night again: 2-1.

Long-range daisycutter from Sagnol to Cech's near post is easy enough but the big keeper still needs two chances to hold it.

Another free-kick into the box, and another header won by Ballack despite the aerial prowess of the Chelsea back-line (four centre-backs, you'll remember). Looks a profitable tactic for the home side.

Kahn moves the quickest he has all match to chase Cole (who had walked off with the ball to waste time) 35 yards out of his goal. Cole gets moving (wisely) so Kahn is reduced to shouting at the referee who looks decidedly nonplussed. Boiling up nicely all the same.

Drogba tries to wriggle through a host of Bayern defenders; and almost succeeds before he is penalised for a foul.

Bayern make another change. The anonymous Makaay leaves the field and in his place comes Guerrero, who looked promising in the first leg.

Makelele really does a job on Scholl with a nasty looking foul on the substitute. Luckily for Chelsea the resulting kick is wasted but Scholl still looks to be moving sheepishly.

Batten down the hatches time for the visitors. Off goes the guile of Duff and on comes the industry of Tiago.

Chelsea rattled now. More balls into the box and a towering header beats Cech but not Gudjonsen who is judiciously placed on one of the Chelsea posts. The very defenition of a goal-line clearance. Can't hear any cockney accents from the crowd now.

We've got a game on now. Cross fired over from the left is deflected by Huth and, with Cech lost at sea, Chelsea breth a sigh of relief as the ball comes back off the crossbar.

For the first time on the night it looks possible for the home team and, more importantly, they look like they believe it's possible.

Bayern have their tails up now and continue to press down the left through the willing runner that is Ze Roberto. He earns a corner that Huth manages to nick off the head of his captain.

Cross whipped in from deep by Sagnol meet superbly by a powerful, downward header from Ballack. Cech turned it on to his near post but it cruelly span back across the empty net where Pizarro did the rest. When Ballack made his contribution Pizarro might have been offside but the goal stands.

Lifeline for Bayern as Pizarro - looking as though he was just offside - has the simplest of finishes to make it 1-1 on the night; 5-3 overall.

Thunderbolt of a strike from Ballack powers through a crowd of players before fizzing past a grateful Cech's right upright.

Three goals is a big ask in half-an-hour against Chelsea but that is the long and short of Bayern's task. It won't surprise you to hear it is the voices of the travelling fans that are most audible at present.

Kahn keeps his team in the tie - for now. Mistake by Kovac under pressure from Duff allows the Irishman a shot from ten yards but, with next to no time to think, the big stopper palms it away. Great save.

Don't mean to labour the point but Cole pulled off a third quality tackle on Ze Roberto, covering for Huth at right-back. He is in line for a gold star and then some from Mourinho, to whom he has clearly been paying attention in training.

Lofted free-kick from Lampard is aimed at Terry at the back of the box but to no avail.

Great vision from Ballack to play a diagonal reverse pass to Ze Roberto in the box. Wonderful sliding tackle from Cole - doing a very passable impression tonight of a world class right back - denies him after he dwelled on the chance a fraction too long.

Ze Roberto is dumped on his rear end by the corner flag for the second time in a minute; Robert Huth the perpetrator this time.

Great back-tracking from Cole capped by a tackle on Ze Roberto that Stuart Pearce would have been proud of.

Drogba causes problems by making for the byline before Lampard becomes the latest to shoot, and miss, from long range.

First substitution of the night and (surprise, surprise) it's an attacking one from the home team. Off goes the holding midfield player Demichelis to be replaced by the veteran Mehmet Scholl.

Sagnol takes a shameful tumble to the ground and Gudjohnsen gets a yellow card; for protesting his genuine innocence rather than the 'foul' I think.

Free-kick wide left for Bayern is taken by Ze Roberto and it's a good one. Flick on looks to spell danger for Chelsea but it spins agonisingly past a number of German boots.

Lucio really believes he's got his shooting boots on today. Another fierce drive from distance stings the palms of Cech but only a mistake by the keeper would have garnered a goal there.

Drogba uses his strength to win two heaers on to himself and a snap shot is well saved by Kahn. Wouldn't have counted anyway as the Chelsea striker is pulled up for a foul.

As quickly as the game restarts it is stopped for a Chelsea free-kick in the centre circle. 'get at them early' was clearly the gist of the Bayern half-time team-talk.

Half comes to a close with Bayern having expended a lot of energy and commitment but they have absolutely nothing to show for it and their faces tell a story. They are forcing the game, Chelsea haven't done anything special and yet they are in a worse position now that 45 minutes ago. 'Gutted' is writ large across their tired looking faces.

Bayern get another decent enough looking cross into the box but they will have to be better than that to get the better of the giant presence of Cech.

Schweinsteiger, who looks the most likely Bayern player to produce something special, progresses up the right wing to win a corner that is returned to Bayern's midfield to start again.

Drogba gets clear and is not offside for a change. Very wide though and despite out-muscling Kovac the German manages to halt his progress eventually.

Real chance goes begging for the home team. Again it's Ballack but this time he really should have scored; no question. Harmless cross wasn't dealt with by Huth, who had all the time in the world, and he heads it to Ballack, twelve yards out. Great first touch but awful second as he balloons the effort high into the stands (no mean feat in this stadium).

Bayern are still making chances - they really need to start taking a few; or at least one to go on with. Ballack recieved a slick pass to the corner of the six-yard box. Perhaps should have shot but elected to square it but Pizarro was a yard short.

Makaay, looking sluggish and well off the pace, loses possession to Cole in the middle of the pitch. Nice bit of skill to find space but as he picks out Drogba he had wandered well offside.

More worries for Bayern as a hobbling Ballack recieves some attention from the Bayern physio.

Lizarazu lets his desire to force the game get the better of him with an over-exuberant tackle on Cole. Chelsea take the resulting free-kick at a snails pace. Already, tusk!

Looks an impossible task now for Bayern. 3-1 one would put them through but, chasing three goals against a defence of Chelsea's standard is going to be a dangerous game and you'd fancy Chelsea to score again.

Corner comes to nothing for the Germans but they are managing to play exclusively in the Chelsea half for the time being.

Bayern look to make amends quickly and Schweinsteiger comes close with a diagonal shot that is turned behind for a corner by Cech, two hands on the floor..

Gallas showed good skills to work it past Schweinsteige and feed Cole who in turn twisted and turned to buy some space on the corner of the box. Lay-off to Lampard 25 yards out in oceans of space and he didn't need asking twice. Decent strike but a huge defelection off Lucio and Kahn had no chance.

Chelsea stack the odds well in their favour with ANOTHER deflected goal. 1-0 on the night; 5-2 overall.

Lampard harries the German midfield into mistakes and from the resulting throw Chelsea build a bit of pressure.

Kovac recieves the first yellow card of the night and will miss Bayern's next game in Europe. A semi-fianl with Juve or a group game against Rosenborg? Only time will tell.

First-half so far a lot like the first-leg. A lot of huffing and puffing, even a few chances, but not the prettiest game to watch.

Moment of debate as Huth seems for a moment to be holding Pizarro in a bear hug in the box as they wait for a cross. Credit to the Peruvian for not 'doing a Ballack' but Huth is playing with fire there.

Lucio makes another elegant, powerful run from the back to carry the fight to Chelsea but his through ball is easily cut out by Carvalho. Can't fault the lads enthusiasm though.

This is some distance out but Huth looks like he fancies it all the same. Three steps and the ball flies off like a bullet train, but one with faulty tracks, and it is probably still travelling into the night sky even now.

Mistake by Sagnol gifts the ball to Duff who, looking in vain for support, plays for, and wins, a free-kick off the same player.

Lampard gets his first shot of the game away but a corner is all it is worth. That is swung over and it looked as though Gudjohnsen had a chance but did a funny little jump and missed it. Odd.

Schweinsteiger nutmegs Gallas in fine style before jinking into the Chelsea box. Desperately looking for somewhere to pass he finds himself with no option other than to shoot. Cech didn?t look comfortable but managed a smile after the ball flew past his far post. Great run from the German.

Neat one-two between Ze Roberto and Pizarro almost puts the former in before Huth, the man cut out of the game for a moment by the move, recovers to make an important tackle.

Long throw from Huth is won in the air by Drogba but his flick on is off use to no Chelsea player.

Shot from Ballack doesn't trouble Cech before Chelsea attack, again through Drogba, producing a throw high up the pitch.

Cole does his bit to please his boss by tracking back and tackling well but is penalised for a foul that didn't look like one to me.

After both sides were out of the block at pace the game as settled down a bit but both teams are up for a physical battle.

Excitement (of a sort) sweeps the press box as news filters through that Mourinho, unhappy with his seat, has done one back to his hotel to watch the game on telly. Rumours he had a pizza and a four pack of Stella as he left are, as yet, unconfirmed.

Drogba is back on and Teutonic lips are dutifully pursed en masse.

Rush of blood from Lucio (who to be fair I once saw score an over head-kick in a World Cup match) as he tries his luck from about 35 yards and only succeeds in tanning the hide of one of his team-mates.

Ball out of play as Drogba gets carried off with the German crowd a lesson in unsympathetic whistling.

Drogba hits the turf in some pain after being clattered by Kovac after the ball had gone. Didn't look like much to be honest.

Great feet from Ze Roberto to skin Huth in the style of an old fashioned winger and a decent cut back to Pizarro on the penalty spot. Low, powerful shot but Cech shows he can use his feet too and saves smartly. Chelsea carved open twice? Five minutes gone? This tie is anything but settled.

Anxious moment for Chelsea as a Carvalho slip allows the ball to run to Ballack in the box. Quick turn but a scuffed shot blocked by Terry.

Drogba springs the offside trap but Kahn shows a tidy turn of pace for a man of his age by getting to the edge of his box to takle the striker with his feet. Warning for Bayern already.

Early touch for Kahn, early shove for Lucio from Cole and early evidence that Drogba will be playing alone up front with Gudjohnsen essentially a fith midfield player.

Bayern have promised that the stadium will shake once the game gets under way; Faria has promised that Chelsea will not play for the draw that would take them through. Germany v England; Mourinho v Magath; hope v expectation; hype v reality. We are, eventually, underway...

Makaay played a full 90 minutes at the weekend whilst his Peruvian partner only returned to training last week after a lay-off with a thigh injury. Still, they need do what no team has done to Mourinho's Chelsea and beat them by two goals and there's more chance of that with that pair on the pitch.

Bayern on the other hand show a number of changes and will feel all the more confident for them. The principle ones of concern for Bayern fans as they chase at least two goals, sees the return of Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro to the German?s attack. Phew (as they probably don?t say in Munich.

Faria has promised that the hat and scribbled notes will be present in the Olympiastadion; as might Mourinho himself, but in the stands obviously. The only change of on pitch personel sees Robert Huth replace the woeful Glen Johnson, possibly for his local knowledge or just to please his mum, who will be in the crowd.

So, even when he's not there Jose takes all the headlines by sending up his fitness/head of James Bond style communications coach Rui Faria and fourth choice striker/glorified bag carrier Mikael Forssell to the pre-match press conference in his place, much to the ire of friends of Stamford Bridge Uefa.

Bayern's two away goals from the first-leg of this Champions League quarter will make this a dramatic encounter. 4-2 is Chelsea's lead, but can they finish the job? Find out from 19.45 UK time.
